Qualification Overview

Begin your mechanical career with this trade qualification, designed to accelerate your entry into the automotive industry. The Australian Government’s Job forecast highlights a significant increase in demand for qualified mechanics, with around 23,000 job opportunities expected over the next five years.

This course provides both the knowledge to run a small automotive business and hands-on experience in repairing key vehicle systems, such as engines, transmissions (clutch, gearbox, and differential), and suspension (steering, brakes, wheels, and tires).

Upon successful completion, you will be equipped to work as an automotive mechanic, light vehicle technician, or in managerial roles within automotive service, repair, and retail sectors.

Career Outcomes

This nationally recognised qualification is intended to prepare individuals for a broad range of tasks, such as how to service and repair the mechanical parts of motor vehicles including the engine, transmission (clutch, gear box and differential), and suspension systems (steering, brakes, wheels and tyres) on a variety of light vehicles in the automotive retail, service and repair industry.

Qualification Entry Requirements

There are no Training Package entry requirements but it is preferred that the students have a mechanical or electrical aptitude.

Allora College Entry Requirements

  • Students should have completed formal study to demonstrate a sufficient skill level of language, literacy and numeracy to achieve the qualification.
  • Allora college will conduct a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) as-assessment before enrolment to assess the language, literacy and numeracy skill level for prospective students. There is no need to be discouraged about this as the LLN is a great tool to allow us to identify any extra sup-port you may require.
  • Students should be physically strong to be able to conduct tasks which may include but not limited to manual handling, heavy lifting and the ability to stand for long periods of time.

Training and Assessment will be conducted through a combination of blended learning environments. Both knowledge and practical assessments are required to be completed with a competent outcome for each unit to achieve your certificate.

The anticipated time to complete the
course is 3 –4 years workshop-based/ Domestic Students.

Certificate Issuance

A Certificate is issued where all 36 units have been deemed competent. A Statement of Attainment is issued when only some units are deemed competent and the course is not completed in full.

Issuing of your Certificate and or Statement of Attainment occurs within 30 days of your last unit being deemed competent, however, this may be delayed in the event that you have not provided your Unique Student Identifier (USI) or you have any outstanding fees.

Funding options available:

1. Fee For Service

Fees for self-funded students. The Fee for Service is applied when a student is not eligible for or already exhausted the subsidy at that level or where no subsidies are available under their current visa arrangement.

2. Career Start – Apprenticeship/Traineeship Pathway – “Funded by the Queensland Government”

For apprenticeships and traineeships, an individual must be employed as an apprentice or trainee. This pathway is part of the Australian Apprenticeships system and requires all parties to sign an Apprenticeship and Traineeship Training Contract (the Contract) as defined by the Further Education and Training Act 2014 (the Act).

c) Free apprenticeships for under 25s:

The Free Apprenticeships for Under 25s Program is part of the Free TAFE initiatives, a commitment of the National Jobs and Skills Summit to make more places fee free, allowing more Queenslanders to become skilled in areas critical for the economy.

This Program offers fully subsidised training for young people under 25 years who commence in a priority apprenticeship and traineeship qualification.

d) School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SATs)

School-based apprenticeships and traineeships allow secondary school students (usually in Years 10, 11 and 12) to prepare for life after school in a career of their choice.

Students gain real-life workplace skills, hands-on industry experience, earn a wage, and work towards a nationally recognised qualification.
